BACKPACKER's Mini Huez
After watching Carlos Sastre climb to victory today on the Alp d'Huez, three of us decided to attack Lee Hill, perhaps the steepest sustained ascent near downtown Boulder. We left at noon in 87 degree weather, and returned two hours later in a rainstorm, chased by lightning in the hills and good tailwinds down below. In between, we climbed nearly 3,000 feet on Lee Hill and Deer Trail Roads, at grades that hovered around 10 to 12 percent and several times hit 15.
