QUESTIONS ABOUT MYTOPO.COM MAPS
What source information do you use for myTopo.com maps?
All myTopo.com topo maps are built from US Geological Survey 7.5' quadrangles.
These are generally the most detailed maps available, and they provide
uniform information across the entire US.
We'll soon be adding updated Single Edition maps from the US Forest Service,
as well as USGS 1:100,000-scale maps.
Our aerial photography is also built from US Geological Survey photos taken between 1990 and
2002.
How much area does each map cover?
We offer three map sizes (from 18" x 24" to a huge 36" x 44"), at four different
scales. So depending on the size and scale you choose, each map covers from
40 to about 148 square miles.
On one myTopo.com map, you can cover anywhere from a portion of a single
USGS quad to 12 or more topos!
What map sizes are available?
You can choose from three map sizes… 18" x 24", 24" x 36", and 36" x 44".
What map scales are available?
For topo maps, you can choose between 1:15,000, 1:24,000, 1:25,000 and 1:30,000 scales.
We digitally resize the 1:24,000 and 1:25,000-scale USGS topos
to produce different scales depending on your needs.
Aerial photos are available at 1:8,000, 1:12,000, and 1:15,000 scales.
How current is the map information?
It depends on the source maps. For topos, the best way to check is to design your map and
look at the "preview". The source map index has all the quad names and their
dates, so you'll know the currentness of your specific map.
For aerial photos, you can also preview the photo but the date information is not listed.
If you need to know the date of the photo before you order, drop us a line and we'll
look up the information for you.
These maps seem pretty expensive. Is it worth it?
While our maps cost from $9.95 to over $20 each, they are really a bargain
compared to the USGS maps they replace. Since you custom center each map,
it's likely you'll get two, four, or even 12 USGS quads on each myTopo.com
map. At $6 per standard USGS map, myTopo.com maps generally cost LESS than
what you'd have to buy otherwise. And our Expedition Maps are fully waterproof
and tearproof.
Are Expedition Maps really waterproof and tearproof?
Yes. Expedition Maps are printed with specially designed inks on a
synthetic paper and are totally waterproof and resistant to tears.
Why will some maps show varying contour intervals or use
different colors for map features like lakes and rivers?
Both of these variations will sometimes show because your map covers
all or part many USGS topos. Contour intervals may vary because they're
based on USGS maps that vary from 5 to 40 feet, depending on the amount
of relief (topography) shown. Feature colors and symbology
may vary because older USGS maps did not have a standardized printing process.
Do your maps come with a symbol legend? Where can I learn more about the symbols on my map?
Because the content and symbols on USGS maps vary across the country, we do
not print a legend directly on our Expedition Maps. We've added the entire
USGS symbol legend
to our Web site for your convenience.
I use a GPS or compass for navigation. Will it work with your maps?
Yes. You can choose from a variety of navigational grids and styles on your map,
including latitude/longitude and UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator). And
for compass navigation we print the current magnetic declination on every map.
Please note myTopo.com maps are currently referenced to the NAD27 datum, so set
your GPS accordingly!
QUESTIONS ABOUT ONLINE MAP-MAKING
I want to see the map before I buy. How do I do that?
When you make a map at myTopo.com, we'll generate a full-resolution
preview for you to view in your Web browser. With the preview you can
easily check the map content, source, your customizations… everything!
Is the map I see on my computer the same as the printed map I'll receive?
No, the printed map is more detailed and sharper. The map you see while centering
is a smaller scale (less detailed) version of the USGS topographic
map and is used only as a reference for you to choose your map's center and
boundaries. The map you order is made from the most detailed, 1:24,000-scale
USGS topographic maps. What you see is NOT what you get - what you get is much better!
How can I find the exact area I want printed on my map?
With myTopo.com, you can use either of two easy ways to find anyplace in
the continental U.S. fast. Want to jump quickly to a town, mountain peak,
or quad? Rather browse for a map? Use the myTopo.com Search page to get you there.
What are my choices for personalizing my printed map?
You can personalize the cover of your map with any
designations you want. Give it a title (such as "Our Backcountry Trip"), a
subtitle (perhaps the occasion or date), and add your name or anyone else's
who will receive a customized map as a special gift from you!
Why can't I make a map in certain areas in the United States?
Some areas of the United States contain only provisional USGS maps that
are lower in quality. To ensure highest quality and user satisfaction, we
do not allow our maps to be made from sub-standard USGS maps.
Where's Alaska and Hawaii? How about Canada?
We're currently working on the online mapping component for Alaska and Hawaii,
and they should be available this Spring.
As for Canada, the Canadian government uses a different database and copyright
system for their maps, so we are not able to offer maps in Canada at this time.
Please let us know if you're interested and we'll keep you posted!
Can I save my map and decide whether to order it later?
Yes. When you save your map you can retrieve it at any time using your email address.
How safe is my information when I save or buy a map?
We ask for your email address to save maps for free simply because
it provides the easiest way to remember your account, and for us to
communicate with you if there's a problem with a map. We DO NOT share
this information with ANYONE, so you're free from unwanted emails and spam.
We use Verisign credit card processing services, the world leader in online
payments, for a safe and secure purchase process. If you're more comfortable
paying by phone or mail, we offer an OFFLINE payment process as well.
