Map Reading Challenge Press Release

MYTOPO.COM, THE OFFICIAL MAP PROVIDER OF THE PRIMAL QUEST ADVENTURE RACE, WILL OFFER A MAP-READING CHALLENGE THAT WILL TAKE PLACE ONLINE THE WEEK OF THE PRIMAL QUEST RACE

BILLINGS, MT  --  MyTopo.com, the official provider of maps for the 2006 Primal Quest Adventure Race, will offer a fun, free map-reading challenge that will feature terrain actually covered during the Primal Quest race.  The winners will receive a gift certificate for $150 worth of free maps from MyTopo.com and $50 worth of official Primal Quest gear.  To enter, visit www.ecoprimalquest.com and click on the “Take the Map Challenge” banner during the week of the race, June 25 – July 4, 2006.

MyTopo.com designed the online map challenge to test the map-reading skills of adventure racing fans.  The contest involves studying three topographic maps that are actual portions of the maps used by the Primal Quest Adventure Race teams and matching them to the correct satellite image.  Each topographic map features a portion of terrain that is on one of the satellite images.  The map-reading challenge tests the ability to photo-interpret a map.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how many people can get it right,” said Kevin Toohill, founder of MyTopo.com.  “You really have to be able to read a topographic map well to be able to identify the terrain on a satellite image.”

The contest will be available online on Sunday, June 25, 2006 and will last through July 4, 2006.  MyTopo.com will post the correct answers on the www.ecoprimalquest.com site and will notify the winner of the Map Challenge on July 5, 2006.

Good luck Primal Quest Race teams and good luck Map Challenge participants!

BIKEIOWA.COM FOUNDER SCOTT SUMPTER WINS 2006 PRIMAL QUEST ONLINE MAP CHALLENGE

Billings, MT – MyTopo.com, the official map provider for the Primal Quest Utah 2006 Expedition Race, today announced that Scott Sumpter, an adventure racer and founder of BikeIowa.com, was the winner of the 2006 Primal Quest Map Challenge. More than 500 adventure racing fans participated in the online map reading contest, which took place at the www.ecoprimalquest.com website during the week of June 25 through July 4. Scott Sumpter will receive a $150 MyTopo.com gift certificate and $50 worth of official Primal Quest gear.

The contest tested the participants’ ability to photo-interpret satellite images and match them to topographic maps. Fifty-two percent of the participants matched up all three topo maps and satellite images correctly, while 48 percent missed at least one.

“Statistics can be interpreted many different ways, but since more than 50% of the participants aced the map challenge, we can rightfully declare that adventure racing fans are top-notch map readers,” said Kevin Toohill, MyTopo.com founder and the designer of the contest.

The map images used in the contest covered actual Primal Quest Utah 2006 terrain, which was held in the geographically diverse region surrounding Moab, Utah. MyTopo.com will leave the map-reading challenge on its own website for anyone who would like to test their abilities. The correct answers are available on the site. To take the Primal Quest 2006 Map Challenge, visit www.mytopo.com/pq.

When asked how he became such a good map reader, Mr. Sumpter replied “I was in the Iowa National Guard many years ago, but I have really gotten better at reading maps since becoming an adventure racer.” Mr. Sumpter was one of just over 250 adventure racing fans who were able to match up all three satellite images with the correct topo map. His name was randomly selected from the winning entries.

As the official map sponsor of the 2006 Primal Quest Utah adventure race, MyTopo.com provided over 1200 large-format, custom-printed maps for use by the race organizers, each of the official teams, all registered media, and the many volunteers and search and rescue personnel. Official Primal Quest 2006 maps are available for sale. In addition, MyTopo has posters for sale of a satellite image of the Moab area with the Primal Quest course overlaid. A framed version of the poster was given to the Primal Quest’s winning teams. To order a 2006 Primal Quest map set or a poster, visit www.mytopo.com/pq.
